ROLE POSITIONING AND OBJECTIVES
What are the key objectives and expectations from this role?
- To provide strategic direction and leadership to the Data Science team and supervise the delivery of multiple data focussed Projects to support R&D’s Harm Reduction portfolio.
- To support the wider R&D community in data science, data standards, and in finding opportunities for training and upskilling.
- Actively contribute to shaping and developing a data driven culture across R&D.
What is the direct impact of this role on the team or organization?
This role is part of the Global Life Science’s Clinical and Behavioral Sciences sub-function. The role of Global Life Science is to lead and drive the science program for BAT and to provide scientific evidence for BAT’s products in support of tobacco harm reduction initiates and regulatory priorities. The data science team supports the Global Life Science objectives by providing crucial computational skills, including programming, to ensure robust and efficient data mining, analysis, and reporting.

WHAT YOU WILL BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR
- Strong leadership of the Data Science team to drive the implementation of data science projects across BAT R&S.
- Provide strategic direction for improvements and support for existing R&D data storage and analytical platforms.
- Translate unstructured business problems into well-defined machine learning projects for deployment.
- Lead in planning, assigning and review of data science team objectives and ensuring delivery on-time-in-full (OTIF).
- Strong communication and collaboration skills to be applied to drive R&S towards a data driven function.
- Develop a highly proficient team of scientists and establish collaborative ways of working with the wider Science function.
- Lead in reviewing plans for data related projects within R&S and provide feedback regarding their appropriateness and potential risks.
- Lead in developing and running budgets for data science related projects, including supervising expenditure and ensuring adherence to all financial processes and controls.
- Provide guidance and lead training initiatives to scientists across the R&D community.
- Key advocate of FAIR data policies to internal partners and the wider R&D community.
- Complete tasks in accordance with BAT R&D business strategy.

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, AND KNOWLEDGE
- Education: BSc/MSc in a relevant scientific qualification. PhD preferred.
- Sophisticated knowledge and highly proficient and experienced in scripting languages (R, python, SQL) and have rapid prototyping skills.
- Experience delivering from requirement gathering to providing solutions that positively impact business performance.
- Proven understanding of machine learning, data management and visualisation techniques.
- Exposure in delivering digital transformation initiatives within an organisation.
- Proactive, determined with strong interpersonal, organisational, and multi-tasking skills.
- Good communicator - encouraging cross functional working and ensuring projects deliver on time in full.
- Robust financial and eye for business.
- Ability to be innovative and think out of the box.
- Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills
